Sun, June 3: Colmar & Thionville, France
We were actually going to head through Germany to come back but a traffic jam
helped us to choose France instead. On our way, we stopped at a delightful town,
Colmar. It was a beautiful day too. We took a little train ride which included a
hilarious few moments when the train couldn't continue due to a parked car
blocking our route. The train personnel were quite distressed and then chose to
back the thing up and drive down a sidewalk to get us going again. Two of the
train personnel actually pulled on street signs to keep us from hitting them. Too
funny. I especially enjoyed the train ride and D enjoyed smiling at people
and trying to get their attention. We bought some treats and
some pretzels and had a snack outside the big church in the photo below. We also
finally found a nice hand painted fruit bowl that I had been searching for in
our travels. We didn't buy many souvenirs but this was a good way to
remember our trip without adding to our load to be shipped across the ocean. We
stayed at a hotel in Thionville. Not an especially fancy place but it worked out
great. D fell asleep and then I, W, and I (plus the baby monitor)
went to dinner in the restaurant next to the front lobby just down the hall.
They made up some vegetarian food for us and we were in bed really
early. I called my parents from the lobby after dinner to wish them a
happy anniversary!!
One of the many huge, beautiful churches in Colmar, France.
The canal that runs through the town is mostly covered up but can be seen occasionally through little bridges.
D chomps with a bread stick to keep him chilled on the little tourist train ride.
More shots from Colmar. So colorful and historic that I snapped away like crazy.
Our hotel room in Thionville.
Outside our roadside Ibis hotel, I finally get a picture of France's lavender!
Mon, June 4: France to Holland
Our journey ends here. I commend you for actually making it through my whole 'photo album'! It was really such a relaxing and wonderful vacation. Getting back is always tough and a bit lonely. I did really miss talking to my family and friend, Leigh, though so that was good to return to at least. Plus, we have a lot of big things ahead! My friend, Terrilyn, was terribly sweet to look after our outdoor flowers while we were gone. Our garden looked great when we returned!
I at a rest stop baby room so I could change D. He looks bizarrely old here. And, weirdly enough, we couldn't get out of this stupid room! There was no door handle on the inside so we pounded on the door and yelled for a few minutes before the attendant opened it up.
A rest stop in Holland. Not far from our house but the kids really needed the break.
So there you have it!! What I did on my summer vacation. Until my next big trip.........
