Sun, May 20: Avignon, France. Poor D was really lethargic as the
day wore on. I thought he was just tired but by the end of the day he felt too
warm. He ended up throwing up when we returned to the Little House. Gave him some paracetamol and he went to bed early.
W and I went
to the pool and we hoped for the best. By the next day, D was just fine!
Avignon was a really beautiful city. So much history, beautiful
buildings. We bought some food with and had a nice picnic at the Rocher
des Doms park. I and I rode a little tourist train through the city.
One of the many shots of the countryside that was so spectacular.
Bottle baby! I admit that we relied on bottles of milk much more than I would have liked while in the car. Whatever works on those long trips, eh? He always got this huge smile when I presented him with the bottle in the car. Of course, he also got a huge smile when he decided he was done drinking and just wanted to poor the rest all over the place! Oy. At one point, he puked up some milk and poor I freaked out over the smell. He started shouting, "I DON'T WANT TO SMELL D!" We couldn't argue too much but then again this is the same kid who also yelled he couldn't stand the smell in the French bakeries!
Exploring Avignon. After a long hike up the hill, we had a lovely picnic overlooking the city.
Do you think I appreciates the view of the Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes)?!
The half bridge, Pont St-Benezet or Pont d'Avignon. There's a famous song about this apparently which talks about dancing on the bridge. I actually saw people do a few steps on it :-). The bridge used to go across but maintenance was eventually abandoned and about half of it is now gone.
On the Pont d'Avignon. Signs all over tell you to be careful with your kids on this bridge.
A great view of the Cathedrale Notre-Dame-des-Doms from the bridge.
And another little break for I. I got on by himself and ran upstairs. When it started, he started calling out something so W jumped on while it was moving. Turns out I, who refused to sit on a horse, was uptight because he wanted to give his ticket to someone and the ticket taker hadn't gotten to him yet.
Mon, May 21: Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer & Abbaye de Montmajour, France: Based on recommendations from someone in the vast land of the Internet, we started out most days going to a market and getting some fresh foods. This time we went to the southern coast, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. They actually grow rice as well as lots of other things down there. It's also known for these special white horses (that are born gray and turn white at adulthood) and bulls. They have bullfighting there and right before we got there, lots of gypsies had arrived in town for a special annual gypsy pilgrimage/festival. We bought some locally grown rice, fruits, and vegetables. Yum!
There are also wild flamingoes here.
At the Abbaye de Montmajour, the ruins of an old abbey and cemetery. Beautiful view (yet again!)
Another of our favourite stops: the Champion grocery store in Remoulin.
The tree tunnel as we approached the Little House. I ran every day while we were in Gaujac. Tough run with all them hills but very beautiful. The town we stayed in had a very old church in the center of this small town. We had a delicious Ratatouille dish (from Chef W) with our fresh veggies from the day's market and some Cote d'azur wine. I'm not normally much of a wine drinker but it was a nice part of our routine to have some local wine every day with dinner.
